Can Celery Juice Detox Your Skin?

From spirulina to bone broth, health crazes have always been in the consumer consciousness. The recent Celery Juice trend is no exception. Everyone from Busy Phillips to Hannah Bronfman are raving about the juices benefits. Drinking a glass of celery juice a day can reportedly help detox your liver, help with digestion, and improve your body’s immunity. Sounds good right?

“Celery is a vegetable with a very high water content, and improving hydration status can do wonders for your immune system, digestive tract, and overall health. However, the process of juicing removes fiber so you are leaving that benefit in the juicer, not in your glass.” –Elizabeth McNear, Registered Dietician

Well, as with any trend, you have to wonder how much of these claims are true. That’s why we asked Elizabeth McNear, a registered dietitian at the University of Berkeley to give us her two cents. According to McNear, the claims about celery juice are both true and false.

“Celery is a vegetable with a very high water content, and improving hydration status can do wonders for your immune system, digestive tract, and overall health. Another great benefit (specifically to digestion) is the amount of fiber celery provides. However, the process of juicing removes fiber so you are leaving that benefit in the juicer, not in your glass.” With that in mind, you might reap the benefits of celery juice faster eating them, rather than juicing them.”

So what’s a girl to do if she needs that juice kick? McNear has a solution for that as well. “If you are looking for a juiced product I would recommend one packed with nutrients such as carrots, dark leafy greens, or ginger,“ McNear suggests. Our big take away from this is to consider the nutrients you are consuming in a juice, rather than what your internet friends are telling you.

Of course, the big question we have to answer is whether or not celery juice will help your skin.
For this she had this to say, “Celery is made up of 95% water. If you are looking to improve hydration and get that glowing skin my recommendation is good old fashioned water!” Water, as we’ve noted before, is amazing for just about everything.

Will celery juice be the miracle cure you’ve been looking for? Probably not. However, it doesn’t seem like it will hurt your wellness game either. If you enjoy trying out new trends just for the fun of it or if you actually feel the benefits of celery juice, then keep it up! If it’s not broke, don’t fix it after all. Just don’t fall trap to a certain trend being the end-all of health solutions. If you’re looking for some tried and true solutions, however, we have some suggestions.
