An Esthetician’s Guide: To Oily Skin

We get it. Oily skin can be tricky. Of all the skin types, we’ve found that oily skin tends to have the worst reputation. Whatever your skin type, finding a balance with your skin is always the main goal.Your skin care routine will play a huge role in this. That’s why we’ve met with Kyle Soule, a Medical Esthetician and educator at our founder’s Denver based medical spa, Facial Aesthetics, to learn all about the dos and don’ts for oily skin.

Cleanser: Your New Best Friend
Let’s get straight to the point: don’t be an idiot, wash your face. If you’re the type of person to not wash your face morning and night, then this needs to be your first adjustment. For oily skin types in particular, finding a cleanser with the correct ingredients is extremely important. “I always recommend a cleanser with salicylic acid to patients with oily skin. Salicylic acid penetrates the clogged pores that are often seen in oily skin types to deeply cleanse your skin,” Kyle says. She recommends washing your face morning and night with our Energizing Papaya Cleanser as it contains both papaya enzymes and salicylic acid to gently exfoliate.

Don’t Skip The Moisturizer
People often make the mistake of not using a moisturizer when they have oily skin. If you fall into this category, we don’t blame you, it does seem counter intuitive to put moisturizer on any oily face. But when you don’t keep your skin hydrated, it sends a signal to your skin that you need to produce more oil. By not moisturizing your skin, it can actually become more oily.

Kyle states “I’m a big advocate for using moisturizer, but I want to make sure you are using the right moisturizer. It’s important to find a non-comedogenic moisturizer to prevent the pores from clogging and bacteria building up. For oily skin, it’s better to use something lighter like Green Tea Moisturizer. Green tea is a powerhouse ingredient that possesses antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and astringent properties to fight inflammation and bacteria production, making it ideal for oily & troubled skin.”

Less Is More
“People have the bad habit of covering themselves with product. Less is more when it comes to applying skin care products. I always recommend a pea size amount of any treatment product. Over treating can cause irritation and redness,” says Kyle. Whether you are applying a serum or a moisturizer the amount of products you apply can contribute to the excess oil on your skin. Make sure to not over do it, and if you’re not sure always err on the side of caution.

Exfoliate For Your Skin
It’s important for everyone to exfoliate, but it is vital for people with oily skin. People with oily skin tend to have a thick layer of dead skin cells that build up over time. Both chemical and physical exfoliating is key for clearing your skin from this build up. Kyle elaborates, “I would start simple by using a Glycolic Serum in the morning. Glycolic is a great way to gently “unglue” the dead skin cells. Next, you should use a plant based enzyme mask (like the PM Exfoliating Enzyme Mask) once a week. Pair this with physical exfoliation, such as the papaya scrub, every other week, and you’ll see noticeable results.”

Invest In Retinol
Retinol is often lauded as the gold standard of anti-aging, but it’s also great for people with oily skin. As a vitamin A derivative, retinol fights fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, and clogged pores. Retinol increases the cellular turnover rate, so new, fresh skin cells are constantly coming to the surface. Kyle makes sure to note that you have to consistently incorporate it into your routine. She says, “Retinol only stays in your skin every 48 hours. If you’re not using it three times a week, then you’re not reaping the true benefits.” If you are new to using retinol, start with one with a lower percentage like the Pamela Metamorphosis Retinol .25%
