An Esthetician’s Guide To Summer Skin

Summer is finally here. It’s all about sunshine, relaxing by the pool, and taking time to have some fun. Hotter temperatures can lead to less than hot skin. Breakouts, oily skin, and potential sun damage are on everyone’s radar this time of year.

Just like how you have a winter vs. summer wardrobe, you need a winter vs. summer skin care routine. For those of you wanting to rock that summer glow, we’ve got you covered! We met with Lexi Neumann, a Medical Esthetician at our founder’s Denver based med spa Facial Aesthetics, to learn all about the dos and don’ts for summer skin. She also gives you insider tips on what Pamela Metamorphosis products are perfect for this time of year.

Switch Up Your Moisturizer
Moisturizing is key to keeping our skin hydrated any time of year, but it’s important to switch it up when the seasons change. “During the summer, our skin has a tendency to produce more oil, It’s important to apply a lighter, non-comedogenic moisturizer to prevent the pores from clogging and bacteria building up” Lexi says. Since moisturizer is something that you use every day, it’s important to find one you love. For those of you that are fans of our Moisturizer Plus, Lexi recommends switching to our Green Tea Moisturizer for the summer.

Exfoliation is Key
Oily skin is one of the biggest issues for the summer. In addition to increased oil production, when you’re more active outdoors your skin is exposed to outside elements. Exfoliation is pivotal for clearing your skin from the pollution and oil production that can lead to breakouts. Lexi states, “With excess oil and outside pollutants affecting the skin even more in the summer, exfoliation is key to unclogging the dermis from debris. Cell turnover is essential in the summer so look for products with enzymes that promote this.” The Enzyme Exfoliating Mask is a gentle yet effective way to exfoliate 2-3 times per week. Follow this with our Papaya Scrub for an extra powerful cleanse and to add a physical exfoliation.

Find Some On The Go Products
During the summer people are always on the go. Discovering products that keep your skin clear while traveling is a simple solution to potential skin issues. “It’s always good to have a travel pack for your skin. Think of things that are absolute must haves: like sunscreen or cleansers. For me, I love the Pamela Metamorphosis FRESH Towels for my skin when traveling.”

Prevent Breakouts. Don’t Just Treat Them
Just like how you need to get to know your body, you need to get to know your skin. If there are certain times of the year that you know you will breakout, then figure out a skin care game plan. “One of our goals as estheticians is to not only treat breakouts when they happen, but prevent them from happening all together.” Lexi recommends finding products with active ingredients that are proven to fight breakouts and have anti-bacterial properties. Our Energizing Papaya Cleanser with Salicylic Acid is the perfect product to keep around if you have breakout prone skin. Since Salicylic Acid is lipophillic, meaning it can penetrate oily skin and clogged pores to deeply clean your skin, it’s the perfect ingredient for your summer skin care regimen.

SPF: Your Everyday Must Have
Your skin is susceptible to the sun’s rays all year round. That being said, you are more likely to be outside during the summer. Never leave your house without sunscreen. Lexi ends with, “I know people are leery about wearing sunscreen every day because they think it’s too heavy. There are sooo many options when it comes to sunscreen, you can find the perfect one that works for you. Pamela Metamorphosis SPF 30 is lightweight, yet effective. I use it all year round.” Treat your SPF like you would brushing your teeth, it’s necessary for your everyday routine.
